Meet Red October: The Global Cyber-Espionage Ring That Spent 5 Years in the Shadows

Many people do not realize that the United States is involved in another war outside of Iraq, and Afghanistan.  This is the Cyber-War, a battlefield whoose landscape not covered in sand or trees, but in 1's and 0's.  A land where Hard Drives, and PLC Controllers are the natural resources being fought over.  You ask who are the combatants in this war?  The United States, Israel, Iran, China, and probably many other countries very covertly, it even includes it's own groups of mercenaries for hire.  How dangerous is this war?  Extremely, nuclear enrichment facilities are targets, under attack.  What many people don't know is that at least at one point in time since 2007, your computer has participated in this battle.

Want to learn what is at stake in this war?  Check out this article: Lyons, Marty. United States. Homeland Security. Threat Assessment of Cyber Warfare. Washington, D.C.: , 2005. Web You may not want to, unless you would rather not sleep at night.  Yes it's that scary.

So you might ask who is winning this war?  Well that's a tough answer to give.  See many attacks do not get publicized.  In fact some can go years before even a hint is made.  That is the case with Stuxnet on Iran, who didn't admit to these attacks for several years.  Recently the NY Times discovered hackers from China were responsible for hacking their website.  Without knowledge of how successful the attacks were, we can not gage the scope of the damage, or the causalities.  So we have no idea how this war goes.  But it is being fought, and we should all be aware that it is occurring.

The day has come when a few 0's and 1's can bring down a nuclear program.
